  2. world but commonly associated with N Africa
  3. and W Asia. It has two main branches, the
  4. Hamitic languages of N Africa and the Semitic
  5. languages originating in Syria, Mesopotamia,
  6. Palestine, and Arabia, but now found from
  7. Morocco in the west to the Arabian or Persian
  8. Gulf in the east. The scripts of Arabic and
  9. Hebrew are written from right to left. The
  10. Hamitic languages include ancient Egyptian,
  11. Coptic, and Berber, while the Semitic
  12. languages include the largest number of
  13. speakers - modern Arabic - and Hebrew, as
  14. well as Aramaic and Syriac.
